Urban designers and engineers appointed for Bays Market District

The next step in the transformation of the Bays Market District is under way, with the appointment of a team of consultants to work on preparing a masterplan for Sydney harbour’s next destination.

Australian urban designers FJMT will develop the masterplan, and global engineering and development consultancy firm Mott MacDonald will lead a team including engineers from Royal Haskoning DHV and Arcadis to provide engineering services for the construction of a new Sydney Fish Market UrbanGrowth NSW Development Corporation Interim Chief Executive Steve Driscoll welcomed the appointments following successful tender processes.

“The tender processes were extremely competitive, attracting some of the best international and local talent,” said Mr Driscoll. “FJMT and Mott MacDonald are two very talented and capable firms, and we’re very confident they will produce outstanding outcomes for the people of Sydney at the Bays Market District.”

The appointments follow Premier Gladys Berijiklian’s announcement that Danish architecture firm 3XN has been selected to create an innovative and sustainable design for the new Sydney Fish Market.

“With the full team of consultants now engaged, UrbanGrowth NSW Development Corporation will shortly commence consultation on the masterplan for the Bays Market District and design of the new Sydney Fish Market,” said Mr Driscoll.

“We expect to finalise the design for the new Sydney Fish Market later this year, and commence construction on the new facility in late 2018 subject to obtaining all necessary approvals.”

The urban design tender process, which commenced February 2017, attracted 32 applicants and the engineering services tender, commenced November 2016, attracted 25 registrations of interest.

About the consultants FJMT were awarded the contract based on their expertise in masterplanning and architecture and extensive experience on a number of significant projects in Sydney and across Australia, including:

  • Darling Quarter, Sydney
  • University of Adelaide Campus Masterplan
  • Southbank Cultural Precinct, Melbourne
  • Parliament Square, Hobart.

Mott MacDonald has assembled a highly capable team of local structural, marine and civil engineers with experience in waterfront developments including:

  • Foreshore Cove, Barangaroo , Sydney
  • Farm Cove Seawall, (SHFA), Sydney
  • Sydney International Convention, Entertainment & Exhibition Centre, Sydney
  • East Village, Zetland
