Why sustainability?

We believe the best urban areas are vibrant, connected and resilient.

The best urban places bring together economic, social and environmental benefits to create great places for people to live, work and visit. As the NSW Government’s urban transformation agency, it is our mission to create innovative and productive urban places with world class standards of liveability, resilience, inclusion, affordability and environmental quality.

We are well-placed to deliver these outcomes, with assistance from our development partners. We hope to create a legacy of sustainable places and cities for future generations.

COP21 Paris Agreement

“The Paris Agreement’s central aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the agreement aims to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change.

Key outcomes include:

  • A global goal to hold average temperature increase to well below 2°C and pursue efforts to keep warming below 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
  • All countries to set mitigation targets from 2020 and review targets every 5 years to build ambition over time, informed by a global stocktake.
  • Robust transparency and accountability rules to provide confidence in countries’ actions and track progress towards targets.
  • Promoting action to adapt and build resilience to climate impacts.
  • Financial, technological and capacity building support to help developing countries implement the Agreement.”

UrbanGrowth NSW recognizes that the urban environment is a significant contributor to global emissions. The United Nations reports the building sector as contribution upwards of 30 percent global emissions, and 40 percent of global energy demand. We have the ability to reduce this impact by implementing ambitious environmental performance standards across our portfolio.

Create a ‘new normal’

Create a ‘new normal’

When it comes to sustainability and community, Australia has one of the most advanced and vibrant built environment sectors in the world. We will work with all key players and interested developers to provide constant coordination and leadership for the sector that leads new and better standards across the industry.

What is urban Transformation?

Urban transformation is a solution to meeting the demands of a modern and growing city. For us, it’s about transforming government-owned land, which has typically been used for commercial or industrial uses near existing transport and services, to create vibrant new urban places.
